The Norman Arch and Abbey Grounds

Walk through the Abbey Grounds to find the Norman Arch

We have cheated a bit here as while the Abbey Grounds are open as a public park, the Arch might not be Norman and is not open. See the Vivat Trust website for what is happening to it.

This is one of Cirencester’s oldest and most iconic buildings. Built in 1160 it is the one remaining gatehouse to the former St Mary’s Abbey. It has witnessed many events in the history of Cirencester, including the English Civil War period when Prince Rupert’s troops entered Cirencester. From 1564 it was in the hands of the Master family for 400 years. It was gifted to the Town in 1964. The ownership is currently being transferred to the Vivat Trust. The cottage at the side was built during the 18th and 19th Centuries.

bulletPicture the Gatehouse in the days of the old Cirencester Abbey when it would have formed a busy entrance for people on foot, horse back and on carts
bulletLook at its proximity to the old Roman Road network, the Roman Wall and the river and consider the location chosen for the Abbey
bulletSeek remains of the Abbey’s past – where was the fish pond? Can you see the outlines of the Abbey Church?
